A taste of the glossary. The full list has 180 terms.
- LTP
- Last traded price. The most recent price at which the stock changed hands, not necessarily the price you will get.
- Circuit breaker
- An automatic trading halt when the index moves too far in one day. Individual stocks also have a daily price range.
- ASBA
- Applications Supported by Blocked Amount. Your IPO money stays blocked in your own bank account until allotment.
- Book building
- An IPO pricing method where institutions bid first to discover the price, instead of a fixed offer price.
- Right share
- New shares offered to existing shareholders in proportion to what they hold, usually below market price.
- Bonus share
- Extra shares issued from profits instead of a cash dividend. Your share count rises, the price adjusts down.
- DP charge
- The depository participant fee charged when shares leave your Demat account in a sale.
- T+2 settlement
- Trades settle two working days after they happen. That is when shares and money actually move.
Common questions
How much money do I need to start?
Less than most people think. An IPO application starts at 10 units, and in the secondary market you can buy from 10 kitta of many companies. The course covers the real costs: broker commission, DP charge and SEBON fee, so you know what a small trade actually costs you.
When is the market open?
NEPSE trades Sunday through Thursday, 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM Nepal time, with a pre-open session before the bell. It is closed on public holidays; the exchange publishes the holiday calendar every year.
Is this course really free?
Yes. It is written and maintained by the NepseTrading team. The site that pays for it, nepsetrading.com, offers charts, screeners and alerts; the education itself has no paywall and no sign-up.
Do you give buy and sell recommendations?
No. This is education, not investment advice. We teach you how to read a company's report and a price chart yourself, so you never have to depend on a tip from a Facebook group again.
I only have a Mero Share account. Am I ready to trade?
Not quite. You also need a broker account with TMS access to buy and sell in the secondary market. Chapter 2 walks through the full set: bank, Demat, Mero Share and TMS, and what each one does.
What about taxes on my profits?
Capital gains tax is deducted at source when you sell, and the rate depends on how long you held the shares. Chapter 8 explains the rates, the paperwork and the records worth keeping.
