Volume profile and the value area

value area highvalue area lowpoint of controlprice on the vertical axis, volume on the horizontal
Volume plotted against price rather than time. The fattest level is the point of control — where most business was done.
TermMeaning
TPOTime price opportunity — how long price spent at each level
POCPoint of control — the price with the most volume
Value areaThe range containing about 70% of the volume
VAH / VALThe high and low edges of that range
DeltaVolume traded at the ask minus volume at the bid
Footprint chartVolume at bid and ask inside each candle
DOMDepth of market — the live order book

The underlying idea is sound and does not need special data: price levels where a lot of business was done matter more than levels where little was. A volume profile makes that visible in a way a time-based chart cannot.
