Show the working
- Cash per share = Rs 100.00 × 10.00% = Rs 10.00
- Cash total = 200 × Rs 10.00 = Rs 2,000.00
- Bonus = 200 × 15.00% = 30 shares
- Yield on cost = Rs 10.00 ÷ Rs 500.00 = 2.00%
How this is worked out
- This is the calculation people get wrong most often on NEPSE: a dividend is declared as a percentage of face value, not of the market price. A 10% dividend on a Rs 100 face value is Rs 10 a share, whatever the share is trading at.
- Yield on your cost and yield at today's price are different numbers and answer different questions. The first tells you what the holding is paying you; the second tells you what a buyer today would get.
- Bonus shares are shown separately because they are not cash. Valuing them at today's price is an estimate — the price adjusts on the ex-bonus date.
On NEPSE
Dividend income is taxed at source, so the cash that reaches your bank is less than the figure above. Bonus and cash dividends are usually declared together.
