Chapter 8 · Risk, portfolio and taxes

Keeping records the tax office will accept

What to keep, from your first trade, and why reconstructing it later is painful.

48 of 50 · 6 min

Nobody keeps records at the start, and everybody wishes they had. The work is small if done as you go and unpleasant if reconstructed years later from statements.

Keep, per transaction

  • Date, company, quantity, price.
  • The contract note from your broker — this is the authoritative document.
  • All charges: commission, DP charge, regulatory fee.
  • For sales, the tax withheld.
  • For bonus and rights, the date and ratio — these change your average cost.
