An uptrend makes higher highs and higher lows. A downtrend does the reverse. Everything between is a range, and a range is not a trend however much you want it to be one.

Support and resistance

resistancesupportbreak
Levels where buying or selling has repeatedly been strong enough to stop a move. Once broken, a resistance level often acts as support.

Support is a level where buying has repeatedly stopped a fall. Resistance is where selling has repeatedly stopped a rise. They exist because of memory: people who bought at a high and watched it fall often sell at break-even when price returns.

Once a level breaks, the roles frequently swap. Former resistance becomes support, because the trapped holders are now out and the breakout buyers are defending their entry.
